The SGP Ecuador Country Programme has recently produced five videos describing the activities and results of COMDEKS-supported local projects in the socio-ecological production landscapes of two Biocorridors for Living Well in the Ecuadorian Amazon Region: Yaku Samai (“the power of water”) and Akllak Sacha (“the chosen forest”).
The video above gives an overview of COMDEKS-funded projects in the target landscape and includes English subtitles. The remaining four videos in Spanish provide more detailed information on four selected projects in collaboration with the Asociación de Productores de Cacao Fino de Aroma de Carlos Julio Arosemena Tola (Producers Association of Cacao Fino de Aroma Carlos Julio Arosemena Tola “Tsatsayaku”), the Centro para el Desarrollo y la Investigación sobre Movimientos Sociales del Ecuador (Ecuadorian Center for Development and Research on Social Movements), the Asociación Agroproductiva Pashimbi (Pashimbi Agroproductive Association), and the Comunidad Kichwa Santa Rita (Kichwa Santa Rita community). In the videos, communities share their perspectives on how supported activities have contributed to protection and increased resilience of the target landscape. The videos recognize how the projects have improved livelihoods of local communities by diversifying agricultural production and increasing crop productivity through adaptation of the ancient chakras system of family farming, reforestation with timber and fruit trees, recovery of local fish species, and improving access to clean water as well as supporting income generating activities such as production of handicrafts using non-timber forest products, among other initiatives.
